Made in their Portland, Oregon factory, the Mountain Pass was created to be a lighter weight and more versatile hiking boot that still reflects the classic Danner styling. Built with light hikes and city streets in mind, the overall design is inspired by the original Mountain Light with an updated construction method that integrates the shank, midsole and lasting board into a single piece. This new, unified platform, combined with a low profile Vibram outsole, allowed a significantly reduced weight and created an out-of-the-box comfort that doesn't come standard with most classic hiking boots.
The new limited series Irish Setter appears as if out of a time machine. Red Wing has dusted off old machines, called in help from retired workers, and experimented with tanning methods that could recreate the distinctive color that gave the boot its hunting dog name back in the early 1950s. In addition to its vintage hue, they've added some other historically accurate cues. The “Red Wing” name is embossed on the inside quarter of the boot, the moc toe is finished with a distinctive rectangular bar-tack stitch, and the backstay chain-stitch is once again done on their ancient Puritan Stitch machine. We use the same mahogany and sage thread of the original, the top band is double-stitched, laces are leather instead of Taslan and the style, size and width are heat-embossed on the gusset, just like we used to do. All of these features add up to an Irish Setter that is both unique and true to its name. Finally, to finish it off, we’ve added the traditional woven “Irish Setter” label inside the tongue and the boots come in a box that features the original logo and text from the 1950s.
While the limited series Irish Setter boots will no doubt be coveted by collectors who want a piece of history, these are Red Wing boots after all, built for a lifetime of service.
Red Wing has been making pull-on boots, a style favored by ranchers and roughnecks, for almost a century. In the 1950s, they introduced the Pecos, named after a town in Texas, and it went on to become one of their most popular styles. Call it a cowboy boot, with a Minnesota twist. Now Red Wing is introducing a limited series Irish Setter Pecos, a pull-on boot with all the historical hallmarks of their famous mid-century moc toe lace-up. They've recreated the distinctive “Gold Russet” leather that was once tanned with sequoia bark and, in addition to this vintage hue, added some other throwback features. The “Red Wing” name is embossed on the inside quarter of the boot, the backstay chain-stitch is once again done on an ancient Puritan Stitch machine, they have used the same mahogany and sage thread of the original, and the top band is double-stitched. Finally, to finish it off, they’ve added the traditional woven “Irish Setter” label inside the boot and packaged them in a box featuring the original logo and text from the 1950s.
Red Wing Shoe Company had an office in Dallas, Texas as early as 1923 to serve the unique market of ranchers, cowboys and oil drilling roughnecks in the region. At the time, most of these workers wore pull-on riding boots, often with decorative stitching, and Red Wing responded with one of its own in the 1930s. This pull-on boot was given a new name, Pecos, after a town in Texas and it evolved into one of their most popular styles, thanks to its simple design, comfortable fit, and rugged good looks. Still made the same way with quality leathers and attention to detail, the Pecos is now seen on hardworking feet from coast to coast, both ends of the Mississippi, and everywhere in between. Call it a cowboy boot, with a Minnesota twist.
