Cleaning & Seasoning Your Smithey

Cleaning & Seasoning Your Smithey

Two of cast iron's finest features are its rugged endurance, and its ability to cook just about anything- from baking cornbread to frying chicken. With the proper care, these kitchen workhorses will truly last a lifetime.

To clean your Smithey cast iron skillet, simply wipe it with a paper towel after cooking for light messes, or use a soft bristle brush with warm water and a few drops of soap for tougher jobs.

For burnt-on food, use a metal utensil like a fish spatula or chain mail scrubber with warm water and soap. Always dry the pan immediately and thoroughly by heating it on the stove, then wipe it with a thin layer of cooking oil to maintain the seasoning (we recommend canola or vegetable oil.)

Smithey Ironware comes pre-seasoned, but the best way to build and maintain the seasoning is by cooking with it regularly, particularly with foods that have high fat content like bacon, ground beef, or sautéed vegetables. You should only perform a separate seasoning process if you want to add a bit of shine, speed up the seasoning, or if you restore a rusty pan. If this is the case, they do make a great Seasoning Oil that is formulated to keep your cast iron and carbon steel cookware in top shape. Use to protect your cast iron and carbon steel and apply sparingly to mature a naturally non-stick seasoning layer on your cookware.
