Field Test | Raen Sunglasses

When it comes to essential fashion accessories, a great pair of sunglasses definitely ranks at the top of the list. But are all shades created equal? The answer is a resounding NO. In recent years, RAEN sunglasses have become a favorite among celebrities for their effortless look and mix of classic and on-trend styles. And the company’s high craftsmanship standards make these sunglasses a steal for the price.

Most of the cheaper rack eyewear you see is made using injection molded plastic frames. As the name implies, injection mold frames are made by injecting a liquefied petroleum based plastic into a mold, then applying a spray on finish. These frames are generally less expensive, but you get what you pay for here. They are brittle and far more likely to break. And that beautiful tortoise shell will be fading and flaking in a matter of months.

RAEN’s attention to detail and quality is just one of the many reasons we love them. Each pair is designed in the company’s California studio and handmade with high-grade materials. Their frames are created using premium grade cellulose acetate, a high quality plastic originating from the renewable resources of wood pulp and natural cotton fibers. Acetates are known for being strong, lightweight, and flexible. They also result in greater transparency and richer colors. Unlike the cheaper injection molded frames, acetate retains that color brightness impeccably over time because its hue is actually embedded in the material rather than sprayed on. Its unique aging stabilizers prevent peeling, fading, yellowing or other discoloration from UV light or skin contact. Additionally, acetate is hypoallergenic, making it safe for those with sensitive skin!

RAEN also goes the distance when it comes to the frames’ structure. Each temple has a wire core embedded in it. This piece of hardware is what holds the temple shape, and keeps your favorite pair of shades fitting your subtle nuances for a long time to come. Because the hinge is mounted to this wire core, the frames are strong and sturdy throughout their entire construction-ready to stand the test of time.
